Course Description

'M' in MASTER stands for Math. For this course, the class will cover the fundamentals of statistics and probability before going more in depth to understand different ways to use probability. The course will also cover concepts such as factorials, combinations, and permutations. The class will be challenging and fun for all levels of math students!

“We’re looking forward to teaching about the basics of probability to show students one of the many applications of math in the real world and to help them go above and beyond what is taught in school!”

Week 1

We will first introduce the basic concepts of probability and solve some practice problems. We will play a short Kahoot to gauge the students’ different levels of prior knowledge. Then, we will share a presentation about the history and different types of probability. Finally, we will end with some group work to solidify understanding of concepts.

Week 2

We will begin by quickly reviewing concepts from the previous class. Then, we will learn about factorials with examples including rearranging words and drawing cards. After that, we will play a Kahoot for fun and answer any questions about factorials. We will also review the solutions to the Kahoot questions to solidify the students’ understanding.

Week 3

We will begin by reviewing factorials from last class. Then, we will introduce the concepts of permutations and combinations with a presentation and example problems. We will move on to a worksheet to challenge the students to solve varying difficulties of permutation/combination problems. Finally, we will go over solutions and answer any questions that the students have.

Week 4

We will review all the concepts covered so far. Then we will have a short, friendly, team math competition. After that, we will work on problems/final projects and answer any lingering questions.
